Emergence of New Frontiers in Science Between Researchers from the North and the South

Context

The Research Institute for Development (IRD), a French research organization operating internationally for 80 years, has established numerous partnerships with various research and development institutions in the Global South. Aiming to strengthen its scientific partnership with Asia, particularly on issues related to water governance, the IRD organized an international meeting to collaboratively develop a research and development strategy on these topics. Researchers from six Asian countries (Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Nepal, India, and Laos) were invited to participate.

100 researchers and doctoral candidates, along with 20 institutions, participated in the meeting

6 months and 8 workshops were required to prepare

A common research strategy was created for the coming years

Our mission

Lisode was tasked with designing the collaborative framework for this meeting and facilitating the emergence of innovative common ideas among participants. This involved:

  • Preparatory work for the workshops (selection of themes, working materials, etc.)
  • Empowerment of North-South pairs to facilitate subgroup workshops
  • Supervision and facilitation of plenary sessions and roundtables

Impacts and results

Despite language barriers and disciplinary silos, the working framework we proposed enabled mutual understanding among researchers from different countries, convergence of interests towards new and promising themes, and engagement from each participant to further explore the reflections initiated during this meeting internally. This also resulted in the development of a roadmap, where each willing participant could position themselves on the identified projects.
